THE SONG OF LIFE

Life is so complex to anyone's understanding. It gives you great peaks and shows you the highs. But when you start enjoying the highs it throws you down and shows you the lows...

26/11...this day can never be washed off from the memories of any Indian. This was the day our country witnessed one of the deadliest terror attacks. What made it more miserable was the fact that the entire event was aired live on television. This one event has changed the way we looked at life, the way we sang the SONG OF LIFE.We know life can change any moment. You need not be in the border of your territory to feel the pinch. You could be dining in a cafe, enjoying a holiday with family or even waiting for a train at the station when life would blow a huge avalanche of change.

This day...the one which can neither be forgiven nor forgotten.

BT-BRINJAL

India is the place of origin of Brinjal or egg plant. It is been cultivated in India for the last 4000 years. It is grown all over India around the year.It accounts for all most 10% of the total vegetable produced in India.
  • Bt.Brinjal is the genetically modified form of Brinjal (Solanum Melongena)in which a foreign gene cry1AC obtained from the soil bacteria Bacillus Thuringiensis is inserted to make it pest resistant against the fruit and shoot borer insects.
  •  Bt Brinjal was developed by ABSP-II (Agricutural Biotechnology Support Project), a consortium of public and private sector institutions funded by the United States Agency for International Development and  Cornell University. It was formed to develop and commercialize bio-engineered products in developing countries like India. It is marketed by MAHYCO in India.
  • The GEAC(Genetic Engineering Approval Committee) had in Oct 2009 approved commercial cultivation of bt brinjal. As it would reduce the farmer's dependance on pesticide and ensure better yeild.
CLAIMS by the developers:
  • It is claimed that the bt variety of brinjal would reduce the pesticide use by 80% due to its inbuilt tolerance. This will address the human health problems related to pesticides.
  • It also reduces the damage to the crop to 5-20% whereas the damage caused by the fruit and shoot borer to a native variety was between 50-60%.
  • Due to its in built tolerance it would increase the yield at the same time reduce the use of pesticides and eventually increase the income for the cultivators.
  • It is also claimed that the cry1AC gene is an insecticidal protein which breaks down when cooked and is not activated in the acidic medium of the stomach. Thus addressing all concerns related to health.
Argument against Bt Brinjal:
  • There has not been a risk assessment test for this crop in the Indian context.
  • Bt cotton cultivated in various parts of the county have failed. This can also be a case with bt brinjal.
  • In the long run the target pest may develop resistance to the crop , leading to a high intensity crop failure in future. In India bio safety testing does not require studying medium and long term impact of GM technology.
  • Small intestine is alkaline and can activate the cry1AC endotoxin bringing about its toxic effect by its absorption.
  • Without safeguards, it is possible for a crop variety to benefit from local resources and yet return no benefit to the community, leading to corporate control over food crops.
  • It was claimed by a Karnataka based NGO that MONSANTO did not take permission required by law when using genetic material from local varieties of brinjal this can destroy our indigenous varieties of brinjal.
.Due to wide opposition from various environmentalists, farmers and NGOs a moratorium was put on the commercial release of bt brinjal by GOI in Feb 2010.
India is one of the 12 mega biodiversity countries in the world and it needs to protect this biodiversity while ensuring commercialisation of GM products. Without safeguards, a GM crop variety could dominate, leading to corporate control over food crops. Also, communities should get a share in benefits arising from the use of biological resources and knowledge.

In October 2013 Bangladesh approved the commercial cultivation of bt brinjal. It is the first county in south Asia to cultivate a GM food crop and the 29th in the world to grow GM crops. The National Committee on Biosafety(NCB) the regulatory body for GM crops in Bangladesh has approved four varieties of bt brinjal for limited scale cultivation. This has raised concerns in India and the environmentalists have urged the government to safeguard the food and seed supply along with biodiversity.
India has to explore all options under the Cartagena protocol to ensure Bangladesh takes all measures to see that our biodiversity is protected from any trans border movement of GM crops.

AMBASSADOR-a symbol of the bygone era

India is indeed a melting pot of cultures as exclaimed by its first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. From Kashmir to kanyakumari India is painted with different colours of culture, traditions, festivals and languages. Sometimes even the same festivals celebrated in different parts of the country may differ drastically. But there are some things in common among us Indians and that is we are people with a huge heart and love to celebrate life. We love everything in large quantity. May it be the amount of ghee in food or number of people in a group on a pilgrimage; it’s always a large number and Ambassador has been a symbol of this celebration and huge heartedness.

The shutting down of the ambassabor’s plant in Kolkata symbolizes drawing curtains on an entire era. India, dominated basically by a joint family system has undergone a lot of transition. Transition from a joint family system to that of a nuclear one, from peaceful rural life to an ambitious urban one, from green cities to concrete jungles and so on. And Ambassador has been a silent witness to this transition.

Ambassador was a symbol of wealth, power, prosperity, large heartedness and above all unity. It is this car that carried people beyond its capacity during happy and sorry times. It was never suffocating to be stuffed in among many others into this car as it was fun. Kids loved to sit on their elder’s laps and play and sleep and do everything possible. And not to forget the enormous amount of luggage it carried too from vegetables to newspapers to animal feed and so on. This was a car that united people. I still remember hiring a single taxi (which in early times meant only ambassador cars) for our extended family of 10 and yet nobody complained of any inconvenience. Today things have changed with the growing Indian economy. The numbers of cars have increased, so has the number of nuclear families. We value our convenience and privacy more than the family union. We hire a mini bus for our pilgrimages with family. And if it is too crowded we call off the trip. This is the transition I was talking about.

Ambassador was also the most powerful car of India. The one that carried our politicians and bureaucrats. A car that many dreamt of as a symbol of position and power. Often called as the lal bathi gaadi it commanded respect and honor. Being a lal bathi leader increased ones pride and prestige in society. Now times have changed, people are more demanding . Government officials have bigger and better professional vehicles and offcourse there are restrictions on the lal bathi aswell.

The end of Ambassador has a lesson for life: Evolve or perish! Change is inevitable and the ambassador has failed to evolve with respect to changing times. It stood where it started, still without any change in machinery ,technology or even esthetics. Its primary competitor the maruthi 800 though initially took over as India’s family car evolved, modified and even perished with a lifespan less than that of the ambassador. But the ambassador refused to change. It ‘s numbers have diminished over the years being replaced by other modern and economic cars. India has evolved over the years so has its economy leaving behind the ambassador car.

Ambassador is sure not to go out of site. At least for another couple of years it is going to ride the streets of India carrying forward its legacy and finally end its long journey. Wait !it is not going to be out of site, as it will be valued even more than before as part of a vintage collection. And for our future generation? They might have a lesson on road transport saying there existed a car that was so dearly loved by our forefathers and it was called the Ambassador. A true ambassador of India life.
